As we reflect on the horror that was 9/11, we take comfort, as Pope John Paul II reminded us the day after those attacks on our soil, that in the eternal battle between good and evil, it is faith in God that ensures the victory over sin and death. For those old enough to have lived through that awful day, we'll never forget where we were, and that even in all of that pain and suffering we witnessed, it was the ordinary goodness of our citizens that prevailed, whether at the Twin Towers of New York City, the Pentagon in our nation's capitol, or on that lonely field in western Pennsylvania.
Gospel of the day: Luke 6: 20-26 “Blessed are you when people...denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man.”
Saint of the day: Saint John Gabriel Perboyre
Quote of the day: Pope Saint John Paul II (speaking about 9/11) “Even if the forces of darkness appear to prevail, those who believe in God know that evil and death do not ever have the final say.”
Poem of the day: “Elegy in a Country Churchyard” by G.K. Chesterton The men that worked for England They have their graves at home: And birds and bees of England About the cross can roam.
But they that fought for England, Following a falling star, Alas, alas for England They have their graves afar.
And they that rule in England, In stately conclave met, Alas, alas for England They have no graves as yet.
